There are those events that I look forward to every year and then new events that I put on my calendar. Since I'm a Libra, I really like the balance that familiarity brings yet I yearn for some new landscapes and challenges.

I always like going to Dirt Rag's Dirt Fest. This is a one of the biggest festivals on the east coast. I see tons of folks that I know and manage to see some sponsors like Stan's No Tubes and this year Scot Nicol of Ibis was there. It's important to see, face to face the people that make the awesome biking lifestyle possible. This year, I was going to be the...

Spring is a busy time for me with teaching mtb skills. I live in West Virginia, where we have snowy, cold winters. So to teach, I usually head South to Georgia and North Carolina. Spring starts earlier in the South and there are lots of mountain bikers between Atlanta and Asheville!

It is a great time of the year to learn or refresh with fundamentals such as proper body position, bike body separation, vision, braking and shifting. Then the opportunity to practice skills on both man made obstacles that we call 'props' and then taking it to the trails is golden.

I had the...

I'm not one to make a bunch of resolutions for the new year. I like to think of it more as, "How am I going to evolve and grow this year? How am I going to keep moving in the direction that is positive and fulfilling?" By putting these thing out there, I'm hoping that helps me to keep my eye on the prize!

While these are personal goals, I think they can help anyone.

1. Daily To-Do list: I'm easily distracted. I get up pretty early with a list in my head of emails to return, blogs to write, clinics to be planned and workouts to complete. I turn on my computer and find...

I asked my coach, Matty Miller- aka The MTB PHD to help me accomplish two goals this season:
1. Win the WV Enduro Series.
2. Be fit enough to be a great mountain bike skills instructor. He created the perfect balance of endurance riding with some specific intervals. And then weight lifting, plyometrics and skills practice to be able to give lots of demos to my students and not be out of breath.

The WV Enduro series has some great naturally tough and technical terrain with fairly short runs under 8 minutes. My background in cross country racing gave me a good base to...

I have a real appreciation for summer in West Virginia. For one thing it seems like it takes so long to get here! And when it does, it still might be cool and wet and a lot overcast. This year, while May was dry, June was mighty wet into the first two weeks of July.

No complaints here, though! The amazing thing is the lushness from all that moisture. Sometimes I just look around and it's unbelievable all the shades of green...50 shades of green turns me on! So in addition to creating a surreal jungle, the rain makes muddy riding conditions.

Luckily, no trail closures...

Summers are cool here in West Virginia. Temps rarely go into the Eighties and let's face it, its a rain forest! The last two summers, I've been getting people to come up from the city lowlands to take one of my skills clinics or guide them on a ride. Its so nice riding in head high ferns and soaking legs in cold creeks, while getting to ride technical terrain.

Seven lucky ladies attended the Canaan MTB School and honed log hopping skills, off camber roots and rock gardens. It was a beautiful weekend of sunshine and warm temps.

Next up was a Women's Pedalpalloza Skills...

June was a really busy month for me. I started out the month getting back to some racing after a nasty rib injury kept me on the race sidelines. One of my favorite races is the Massanutten HooHa Enduro and XC races in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Its one of those long standing rocky east coast races that added an Enduro to the mix last year. I was stoked to see some young female riders in attendance and even more tickled to fend off the youngsters for another year taking the win both days! The next weekend was another double doing the Cooper's Rock Enduro on Saturday placing first and the...

It seems like summer biking season is in full swing on the East Coast! Dirt Rag's Dirt Fest is one of the best events of the year. Its is a mountain bike festival with over 2,000 people coming out to ride demo bikes, visit sponsor booths, camp with friends, swim in the lake and ride trails. The location is Raystown Lake, Pennsylvania on the Allegrippis Trails. These trails are like a giant pump track. They are all flow and so fun! Everyone comes back to the venue smiling and feeling like a superstar.
This year, my role was to lead women's skills clinics and the Sunday women's...

Sunday Funday

This year I'm racing less on Sundays and recapturing the spirit of riding with friends. There is nothing better than getting out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a small group of friends, riding sweet single track and getting the blood pumping.

It's nice getting out of the lycra billboard that is the racers' uniform and getting into the stylish baggy clothes of a trail rider. I've been loving my ZOIC Navaeh Shorts and ZOIC "Ride with Heart" jersey. It makes a positive difference to put on some comfortable shorts and a cool shirt to go out and ride a...
