Learning to mountain bike is a bit like dancing. Let’s go with the Electric Slide. Sometimes you step forward, sometimes you take a step back and sometimes you look awkward and spastic like Elaine on Seinfeld. I write this after experiencing a week of mostly moving backwards.
I have crashed more in the last two rides than I have in the last 6 months. What makes it most frustrating is that a few days before my string of crashes, I had my best run on the Downieville downhill course. The trails of the Sierra Buttes have become my MTB learning playground. Easy place to learn, right...

Winter Makes the Heart Grow Fonder...

We have had a legitimate winter so far in the Sierra Nevada. This is great news for our reservoirs and drought stricken region. Unfortunately, this has been very sad for my mountain bike. The trails are not in a condition to support riding, so my bike has been hung up for the winter, collecting dust and tires going flat. Every once in a while, I go out to the garage and visit my mountain bike. I long to go play in the dirt with her, but she is banished to the dark corner of the garage to spend the winter alone and ignored (cue sad violin...

I was having such a fun day on the bike. It is always the slow falls on the easy part of the trail that end up getting me. You’d think that would motivate me to hit bigger stuff, since I have yet to get hurt on any of it, but it doesn’t. I was riding along on some grass. Yes, beautiful, soft, green, plush grass. To my credit, I was practicing a tricky maneuver, but still. I ate it on grass going less than 4 mph. As I was falling to my left side, I was relaxed and didn’t even bother to try to clip out. I thought, “It’s grass. Whatever. I’ll be fine.” I felt a slight scrape on the...

“Oh shit, what time is it?” I said, as I realized that we didn’t set the alarm and it was brighter out than it should have been. Luckily, we were only a 5 minute drive from where I needed to be in less than 30 minutes. I rushed to pull on my baggies, fill the hydration pack and pound some breakfast and coffee. I was so excited. It was the first day of a weekend long women’s MTB skills clinic, the Ladies AllRide Tour with Lindsey Voreis and Cog Wild. The childlike excitement of heading to summer camp was in the air. Once we arrived at Seventh Mountain resort in Bend OR, Kurt checked...

I come from a competitive roadie background. Give me a crit and I’m in hog heaven. Last month marked my first year riding a mountain bike. It has been a blast! One of the best things that has come out of mountain biking is all of the awesome people I have met and friends I have made.

About 7 months ago I moved to a new state and started a new job. I knew four people when I moved to Reno and knew no one at my new job. I have always been someone who is a little shy around new people and slow to make friends. I quickly became the “biker chick” in the office due to the fact...
